WHAT’S UP @ 6855 – June 29 to July 5

Worthy Brothers All,

A big THANK YOU to all the Brother Knights who helped with the altar servers’ appreciation BBQ yesterday, and with the setup and takedown for the State Banquet later in the day.

We have just one more Council activity for fraternal year 2014-2015: the First Degree Exemplification this Monday. Our outgoing State Deputy Ed Shawchuk will be in attendance.  Let’s give it our best effort!

We herald a new month and a new fraternal year this July 1st by celebrating Canada’s birthday in grand style marching in the Steveston Salmon Festival parade.  Our Fourth Degree Knights lead the charge in their colourful regalia and banners.  All other Knights are enjoined to attend in their KofC business blazer.  It’s always a fun event and an opportunity to visibly promote our Order in the wider community.  There will be a post-parade lunch reception hosted by Pope John Paul I Assembly at St. Joseph the Worker. Wives and families are welcome.  We hope you have sent in your RSVPs to Faithful Navigator Edgar Ursua so they can prepare accordingly.

As this is my final WHAT’S UP missive before turning the reins over to our incoming Grand Knight Bro. Rely Diego, I bid you all a fond farewell and thank each one of you for your support and patient persistence over the past year.  May God prosper our Council in fraternal year 2015-2016!

WHAT’S UP @ 6855 – June 22 to 28

Worthy Brothers All,

I hope you all had a very loooooong day celebrating with your Dads / kids…

basketballAnd if today made you feel your age, perhaps you should make a point of being at our Sports Night this coming Friday.  Break out a sweat and shoot some hoops…  Bring your family along.  Let’s put some teeth into our Bro. Pat Macken’s assertion in the June 12 issue of BC Catholic:  “The Knights, faith, and sports belong together.”  (Here is a link to the article in case you missed it.)

golf-148630_640The Annual District 23 Golf Tournament held last Saturday at the Country Meadows Golf & Country Club was a smashing success with a total of 80 golfers participating from all over the Greater Vancouver area, with a number of brothers joining in the lunch and awards ceremonies.  The winners trophy now resides with Council 6855 which fielded the winning team.

Congratulations to our fully-minted 3rd Degree Brother Knights Greg Bautista, David Chong and Joseph Lo who were exemplified last Friday together with 20-plus other Brothers at the Canadian Martyrs Church.

This Saturday, we show our Parish altar servers how much we value their faithful service to our liturgical celebrations by throwing them abarbecue party along with some dodgeball for entertainment.  They do appreciate being appreciated!

Please take note that our First Degree Exemplification for June has been restored to its original schedule of June 29 Monday in order to meet the noon June 30th cut-off for this fraternal year.  As well, the State is sponsoring a special First Degree Exemplification honouring Bishop Ken Nowakowski this Friday June 26 at St. Joseph the Worker Church.  With these two opportunities, let’s all give one more big heave toward recruiting a new Knight before we wrap up fraternal year 2014-2015!

Don’t forget to share your bounty with the less privileged by bring an item or two for the Food Bank collection this weekend.

Summer is upon us — full steam ahead!

WHAT’S UP @ 6855 – June 15 to 21

Worthy Brothers All,

Kudos to the hardworking Pancake Breakfast crew!  It was heartening to see the “older” Knights mentoring the newer Knights on the basics of flipping those flapjacks.  We also spied a few wives sneaking in some helping hands to make the work go faster.  Your fine service is much appreciated by our parishioners and pastors and Sisters.

Speaking of appreciation, our Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club treat for our clergy and religious was very much appreciated. Sr. Mary John Paul was taking so many photos of the beautiful setting.

Your prayers on behalf of Sis. Lyce Rozario were well-heard:  Bro. Rick reports that her knee replacement surgery was a great success and we can hope to have her back on her twinkletoes after a few months of rest and rehab.

Here is a note of thanks from the family of our late Bro. Jackson Valenzuela for the condolences and assistance you have generously extended to them.

Please also extend your condolences to our Bro. Patrick Macken who lost his Mom last Saturday.  Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Macken are given below.

Second Degree Knights, time to step up to the Third Degree this Friday at Canadian Martyrs Church.  Please email or phone me (604-314-8962) so we can prepare the paperwork.

And to all the fathers – I wish all of you a blessed time with your families this weekend!

“Knights, faith, sports belong together”

Our Bro. Patrick Macken wrote quite a fine article about the Knights of Columbus’ tremendous support for sports in this week’s issue of the BC Catholic.  Thank you, Worthy State Advocate Ming Lau, for sending us a digital copy.  You can read it here.

This third Person is called, in technical language, the Holy Ghost or the ‘spirit’ of God. Do not be worried or surprised if you find it (or Him) rather vaguer or more shadowy in your mind than the other two. I think there is a reason why that must be so. In the Christian life you are not usually looking at Him. He is always acting through you.” — C. S. Lewis

WHAT’S UP @ 6855 – May 25 to 31

Happy Pentecost!

The Hawaiian Luau was a tropical hit.  Kudos to the Fourth Degree Knights under the faithful navigation of FN Bro. Edgar Ursua and the Assembly 2485 Executive for putting on such a crowd pleaser.  We extend that to the hardworking wives as well.

We hit a few strikes, too, with our JC Family Bowling on Sunday afternoon.  Okay, we did gutter a ball or two…

Congratulations to the four brothers who ascended to the Second Degree last Monday: Greg Bautista, Theodore Brabander, David Chong and Joseph Lo.

Everyone, please bring your candidates to the First Degree Exemplification this Monday.

The Joint Council Spring Brunch is happening on Sunday June 7 from 11am to 1pm at St. Joseph the Worker Parish Centre Gym.  Our host Councils 10681 and 11961 offer a delectable menu at $15 per adult and $10 for kids age 5 thru 12 which includes:

Scrambled Eggs
Pork Sausages
Shredded Chicken Fried Rice
Pork Chow Mein with Bean Sprouts
Diced Beef with Black Bean Sauce
Sweet & Sour Fish
Fruit Salad
Juice and Tea and coffee

Please email me if you would like to join this lighthearted gathering so I can submit a head count by June 1st.

Our clergy and religious appreciation dinner is coming up this June 13, where we treat our Pastor, Assistant Pastor and Sisters to a relaxed sit-down dinner at Mayfair Golf and Country Club.  Our way of expressing our thanks for all they do throughout the year, especially to Fr. Nick as he leaves us for further studies in Rome.  Cost to you is whatever you order from the menu plus the customary taxes and gratuity.  Let me know if you would like to join this occasion so I can reserve the right number of seats by June 8.

And JC Golf registration deadline is coming up as well.  Golf pro or not, this is a good opportunity to socialize over a few holes and burgers.  Or you can skip the golf altogether and head straight for the burgers.  Attached is the registration form which you can fill out and submit to Bros. Francis Lee, Happy Tay or Sundy Arca.

Don’t forget to bring a few cans of food to share for Food Bank Sunday this weekend.

Have a Spirit-powered week!

Happy Victoria Day!

God granted us a beautiful day to March for Life in Victoria last Thursday and we brought our pro-life, pro-woman, pro-child message to the public square.  Some pictures have been posted here.

Thank you to Mike and Doreen Ripplinger for hosting our Monthly Family Rosary in their home.

Our daily Rosary continues at our Lady’s Memorial for the Unborn in St. Paul Church.
